| One Year into The Renaissance |
I’ve been playing my Nintendo again with consistency for a year now, and I want to reflect on that time in regard to collecting Nintendo games and related items.
It all started on December 6th, 1998 – that was the day that I went to Fred Meyer (a department store chain in the NW), looked at the used game rack and saw the used Nintendo games for the first time. I hadn’t played my Nintendo in ages, but I decided to sift through the games anyway. As luck would have it, I found Base Wars and Legendary Wings, two games which I had enjoyed when I was younger. They were ten dollars a piece, but that was a small price to pay for a nostalgia trip.
I hooked up my Nintendo again four days later on my 19th birthday, got back to playing my old games, and kept buying games occasionally until February 1999 came around. That was the month that I got serious about hunting for and collecting Nintendo games and related items. In that month alone, I bought 23 games for reasonable prices and found a toploader NES with a dogbone controller and the A/V hookups for 40 dollars.
I took the bus down to the University District every weekend that February to go to 2nd Time Around and look for games. After a few weeks of doing that, I found out about FuncoLand and started going there as well between the months of March and June. My collection was growing, but it wasn’t until June that it really started to expand.
In June of 1999, I got a credit card and started ordering games online from FuncoLand. I was able to buy The Battle of Olympus and Destiny of an Emperor from them, which are two of my all-time favorite games. As one might expect, I dove pretty deep into those two for a while, which slowed down the rate of games that I was purchasing. However, the largest purchase was still to come.
After finishing up The Battle of Olympus and Destiny of an Emperor again, I made a list and ordered the 16 Nintendo games on it from FuncoLand. I received them on August 24th, 1999, which put my collection at 128 Nintendo games. That ended my purchasing spree, but not my playing spree.
I played Nintendo like mad from the time I received that shipment until college started this quarter on September 27th. Of course, my gaming slowed down after that due to school, music, work, and new personal relationships.
While my ties to the Nintendo may have become a bit stretched as of late, there’s definitely an itch to play River City Ransom that I’ve been meaning to scratch!
