Heroes in a Half Shell
It all began a few weeks ago by looking for some old tapes of mine – seven tapes in total, six of which are full of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons and the seventh being a Legend of Zelda cartoon.  It took a little effort to find them, but find them I did.

I watched the Zelda cartoon first and felt my age drop to half of what it currently is, like I was watching it for the first time all over again.  It took a couple more weeks before I approached the TMNT cartoons, but once I popped one in the VCR, I was awash in the glow of nostalgia.

The tape started and once the vocals of the theme song came in, my face lit up with the biggest smile I’ve had in ages.  When I was younger, watching TMNT cartoons came in only 2nd to playing Nintendo as my favorite activity.

It brought me back to the times that a friend of mine and I would wrestle TMNT action figures against each other, as well as the time another friend had a TMNT-themed birthday party.  His mom had made bandanas with eye holes cut out of them as party favors, and I came home with a Donatello and Michelangelo one.  The Donatello bandana has vanished without a trace, but the Michelangelo one is readily accessible in a box of mementos from my youth.

As for the cartoons, they didn’t fail to amuse and I remembered some of them quite vividly, even though I hadn’t watched them in close to a decade.  It took a few sessions to get through all 12 hours of them, but I found myself still wanting more.

It then occurred to me that I had the first movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, on VHS as well.  I found it, fired up the VCR and began to watch.  Before the movie began, there was a Pizza Hut commercial that I hadn’t seen in ages.  It was pure 80’s cheese and I loved it.

After watching the movie and finding it to be better than I remembered, I was off to play through the NES titles once again – I wouldn’t be a good NES Preservationist if I didn’t.  I decided to start with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project, as it was a game that I had overlooked in the past.

I’ve got to say that going through all this TMNT-related nostalgia has been highly enjoyable and I’m so glad that I’ve been re-instilled with TURTLE POWER!!!
