| Blockbuster Video: Wow, What a Difference |
I’ll start off by not sugar-coating things – Blockbuster Video was my Disneyland from 1989 to 1994. I would ask my mom almost every weekend if I could rent a game, and the answer a good majority of the time was yes. Many thanks go out to her!
While at Blockbuster, I would peruse the racks and continue to be amazed at how many games there were, as well as how many games looked like they would be an absolute blast to play. A lot of the games had titles that would jump out at you from their boxes – Bionic Commando! Ninja Gaiden! Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom! Well, maybe not the last one.
In any event, there were certain games I would rent quite a lot – ones that I couldn't find to purchase at the Fred Meyer across the street. These were also games that I enjoyed thoroughly, like River City Ransom, The Battle of Olympus, and Destiny of an Emperor. They were a significant part of my past, and my exposure to those three games and so many others (most of which ranged from good to outstanding) is one of the main reasons I still enjoy gaming on the Nintendo so much today.
As time passed, the Nintendo games started disappearing and now Blockbuster neither rents Nintendo games nor has any left to sell. I still went there with some frequency while Super Nintendo games were available to rent, but I stopped going once there were only Playstation and Nintendo 64 games there. The last time I went there was last summer, and the only reason I did was to look for old Nintendo or Super Nintendo games to buy. There weren’t any, so I left with my money in my wallet and my memories in my head.
However, the purpose of this text is not to admonish Blockbuster for no longer carrying Nintendo games to rent. It is to celebrate a time when life was simpler, when the Nintendo was in full swing, and when my idol was an elven dude in a green hat.
To Blockbuster, I thank you for being there to provide me with so many games that helped fuel my creative energy and imagination!
