| A Trip Down Memory Lane |
It was Christmas morning in the year of 1988 and it started like most of them did at my household – I was up at the crack of dawn, my mom got up at a reasonable hour, and my dad waited until the crack of noon to pry himself from bed. The anticipation for opening presents was built up to a fevered pitch that year, especially since there was a rather large box under the tree. I was pretty sure I knew what it was and I couldn’t wait to open it.
My hunch was correct – the present was a Nintendo Entertainment System Action Set and that one gift started me on a path of gaming that I’m still going down to this day. My dad still argues that buying me the NES was the worst thing that he ever did for me, though I’d have to adamantly disagree. I’d say it was one of the best things he did for me and while it was a likely contributor to my weight gain (along with an excessive and improper diet), it more than made up for that by helping my imagination to develop.
I had a wooden sword that my dad made for me when I was a three or four-year-old He-Man aficionado that morphed from He-Man's sword into the wooden sword used by Link in The Legend of Zelda. I used to go out in my backyard and swing my sword at the weeds, pretending they were Octoroks and Tektites. I had a lot of love for that game, but I only had access to it in limited quantities at first, as it was on rental from a video store that was owned by a family friend. After some time, my mom bought it for me and I was so excited to have my own copy. Along with the Dragon Warrior series and Final Fantasy, these games helped develop my interest in medieval times and weaponry.
Time and age got in the way, as once I had purchased my Super Nintendo, I began to play my Nintendo less. I still played it because I had quite the library of NES titles built up, but as I acquired more Super Nintendo games and PC gaming became more prevalent, I played it less and less. By the time I had picked up a PlayStation in June of 1997, my Nintendo was sitting in a box with all of my games collecting dust.
As it drew closer to the ten-year anniversary of receiving my Nintendo, an interest in it was rekindled. As I’ve written before, I decided to look at some used NES games on a whim and found two that I had enjoyed when I was younger – Base Wars and Legendary Wings. I was a fan of Base Wars because it was robot battle baseball and I had enjoyed playing it as a youth. I was a fan of Legendary Wings because it was a game an old friend of mine had, as well as one that we played in our numerous late night gaming sessions that often lasted until four in the morning.
The desire to play Nintendo again comes from the nostalgia forever attached to the system and that it takes me back to a more carefree and imaginative time in my life when my biggest worries were school, homework, and being able to beat the final boss before having to go to bed. It also helps that a lot of these games are still holding up really well after all this time.
I remember all the enjoyment that the Nintendo brought me and all the places I adventured to – Hyrule, Alefgard, ancient Greece, and even to the streets of River City. I’ll always cherish the time I spent playing through those games and I look forward to sharing those experiences with all of you.
That’s the main reason that I’ve started up Nintendo-A-GoGo. There’s also the fact that the sites that have inspired this one keep closing down. Two of my favorites, The NES Enshrined and |tsr’s NES Archive, shut down right around the same time. Another one I frequent, Loogaroo’s Lair of Looniness, is on a bi-monthly update schedule. I respect the reasons for this and I can’t say that I’m the most reliable with updates either, but I have a history with the 2nd generation of NES tribute sites.
I was deep in my collecting phase when these sites were flourishing, as from February to August 1999, I purchased 79 NES games. I participated in Diefwolf’s 1999 NES Game Tournament at The NES Enshrined and I never missed a chance to vote. My homepage was linked by Dief at the time and placed in his top ten, which was an honor to me.
Another reason I’m starting up this site is that I finished my Associate of Science degree recently and I’m taking the rest of this year off from school, so I wanted to use some of that time to create a proper tribute site to the NES. Hopefully I can do so with this site.
So I say welcome! Welcome to Nintendo-A-GoGo!
